Abersoch
June 23, 2019
A lot of people have mentioned Abersoch to me, so we HAD to find Owain (Owi) Lloyd Jones the Harbour Master of this famous beach and sailing resort.
When I rang his number, Wendy his wife told me he was out fishing on his boat, so there was only one thing for it, we had to find Owi's fishing boat!
What a fun and fortuitous encounter it was. Owi had just finished lifting his lobster pots and he invited us to pull up alongside for the interview. Jeremy kindly videod the encounter which you can see here...(his answer to "What is the most unique thing about your harbour?" was "No water!").
Owi's father and grandfather had been HM and clearly it was a very satisfying job. Apart from looking after 150 beach moorings, one of Owi's more unusual jobs involved taking every last brick and sack of sand over to the St Tudwals Island opposite Abersoch, so Bear Grylls could build his house adjacent to the lighthouse (see photo). Ironically Mr Grylls rarely visits his island now which is probably a relief as Owi is also the water taxi!
We were very fortunate in being given, (I did offer to pay!) 3 cracking lobsters which Toby cooked and all three of us enjoyed that night at anchor. Future Harbour Masters please take note!! Thank you very much Owi, your friendly dog and your efficient secretary Wendy!
