Ardglass 2 of 2
May 22, 2023
22 May to 2 June 2023 - Ardglass (Part 2 of 2). A fantastic 80 berth marina run by Ricky Le Bloas and Fred Curran (90!).
Good Dog and I spent 12 happy days in Ardglass Marina (or more correctly Phennick Cove Marina). Ricky deserves a special mention as he was so kind and helpful to me. It was built as a special community during the worst of the Troubles.
I really want to promote Ardglass Marina to other sailors.
1. Ricky and Fred who run the marina. Fred turned 90 in April - I hope I am working by the sea when I am 90!
2. South of Ardglass there are three other small harbours - Annalong, Newcastle and Dundrum.
3. Ardglass is very historic - the harbour is first mentioned in 1172 and the Anglo-Norman invasion. Then John de Courcey moved north from Dublin, with 22 knights and 300 soldiers, fighting battles with local Irish chieftains and conquering lands all the way. Some say the "troubles" started back then.
4. The well protected marina at low water. It is accessible at all states of the tide, has great facilities and is close to some beautiful countryside.
5. 400 litres of diesel delivered by road Oil Tanker (Red diesel is no longer allowed in NI)
6. Motorbike being transported to the TT race.
7. Tiny Annalong Harbour - full of Black Guillemots in special nesting boxes.
8. Newcastle harbour entrance with the Mourne Mountains behind.
9. Newcastle RNLI crew who offered me refreshment on my bike ride.
10. Beautiful Dundrum harbour quite far inland. Dundrum - the name of my next spaniel! (I wonder if anyone reads down this far?!).
Thank you very much Ricky and Fred!
