Dartmouth 2022
Mainland circumnavigation complete!
August 27, 2022
Return to Dartmouth and completion of my circumnavigation of the UK mainland. Harbour Master number 209.
- Three and a half years after leaving Dartmouth, Good Dog and crew were welcomed back into this beautiful harbour by HM Paul Britton.
- Paul was brought up in south Devon but before becoming HM he travelled the world navigating cruise liners for Carnival, specialising in safely for P&O and then managing Marine, Port and Itinerary management for Disney Cruises. I cannot think of a bigger or more responsible job..... and you would think that organising regatta day at Dartmouth would be a doddle for someone so experienced.
But things happen fast on the water, and we witnessed first hand Paul dealing with a yacht whose engine was on fire. Paul and his team had to act fast to raft up next to it and prevent it drifting upstream and crashing into dozens of moored boats. All the while the regatta carried on with the crowd oblivious to the slick rescue happening in front of their eyes!
- A big thank you to Ed Botterill, Chairman of Dartmouth Royal Regatta for inviting me to be part of the parade of sail on the closing day of the famous Dartmouth sailing regatta, it was a really special day and made for an emotional return. I was very touched to be greeted by the mayor, David Wells and it was good to see Assistant HM Jack Handley again who waved me off in March 2019.
- Home Port. I often get asked where my "home port" is. Being constantly on the move I don't really have one, but if I was to choose one it would most certainly be Dartmouth!
Thank you Paul, Jack and all the team at Dartmouth for making my return very special and putting us in a top spot to watch was it one of the best firework displays in the country.
