Trinity House

Trinity House - a small taster of their history and work.
For over 500 years this charity has been safeguarding seafarers, but not just by running our Lighthouses. I was lucky enough to meet the current boss, Captain McNaught who is titled "Deputy Master". The Master is The Princess Royal who followed her father. Ian then invited my crew to his office, the imposing "Trinity House" itself, near Tower Bridge.
If I said the full name of TH is: "The Master, Wardens and Assistants of the Guild, Fraternity or Brotherhood of the most glorious etc etc".... you will realise there is no short way of describing this deeply historic organisation.
Their original purpose was the safe pilotage of the Thames in Henry VIII's time, but by 1566 Elizabeth I requested TH ".. at their costs, make, erect..beacons..and signs for the sea..whereby the dangers may be avoided". Today TH manage 600 navigations marks around the coast and inspects a further 11,000.
TH constructed its first Lighthouse in 1609 (Lowestoft) and its first Lightvessel in 1732. Today it operated 65 Lighthouses and 7 Lightvessels off the coast of England and TH has a watching brief over the whole of the UK.
TH runs much more than lighthouses. Its work extends to education of the maritime industry and it runs a large welfare arm. It is responsible for the "visibility readings" on the shipping forecast and is at the forefront of technology used for modern day navigation - e.g. the threat of cyber attacks on our navigation systems. It operates an Admiralty Court convened for serious accidents and has 430 Elder and Younger Brethren.
At the helm of this amazing organisation is Captain Ian McNaught. Eleven years the Captain of the QE2, you can imagine he had some great stories (he once sunk a yacht with his ship on purpose!). Photo 7 shows him explaining how tricky is was reversing the QE2 into a tight berth on a fast flowing River Hudson.
Thank you Ian for your valuable time and an enlightning visit. @trinityhouseuk
I am slowly circumnavigating #GB in a #Nauticat, attempting to visit every #harbour with a #harbourmaster #fundraising for #seafarers_kgfs charity
